Jumpster

01 / the meeting

Pedregal Studios was a freelance interior design company that worked for businesses needing custom-made furniture and renovations. They got a project called Jumpster, in which graphic design was required. The owner of Pedregal Studios invited me to collaborate with them in this area.

My task was to deliver informative, stylish, and uniform signage design. Signage design is complex, as simplicity is the most important factor. The brain needs three seconds to read and assimilate graphics, so signage must be clear but graphically attractive and match the rest of the graphic concept.

02 / the process

We worked on the project for about a month. To better understand the customer's needs, I visited the location in person and observed the environment firsthand. It provided me with valuable insights that were reflected in the final designs.

While walking on the premises, I could identify the customer's needs and based on what was discussed earlier, offer new proposals regarding the originally planned design.

03 / inspiration

Once the idea was clear, I started looking for inspiration. As it was a new business idea at that time and place, there were no other similar businesses to compare with or get inspiration. Sometimes it makes everything easier, but it can be also frustrating if you are short on ideas. I took it as an opportunity to innovate.

Pedregal Studios sent me some drafts and brainstorming boards to help me with the general idea.

04 / ideas

With the requirements, colour palette, and general concept in mind, along with the Jumpster graphic design manual in hand, I began by creating a collage of ideas in PowerPoint.

Once I had a solid visual direction, I moved on to creating the actual graphics in Illustrator. Whenever I finished a set of graphics, I would email Daniela, the interior designer, to exchange ideas and get feedback on the designs. We had a great working relationship, and luckily, the owner trusted us completely —which isn't something that happens often. That level of trust made the entire process much smoother and more collaborative.

05 / results

The biggest takeaway from this project was learning how to blend graphic design with interior design and how to collaborate with a company in a field that's different but still closely connected to graphic design. It gave me a deeper appreciation for how design principles can cross over into various industries.

After this project, I worked on other projects, but this one stands out as it was my first real experience working as a collaborator in a multidisciplinary team. It was a great introduction to working beyond the traditional scope of graphic design.
